When saving jpg images in browser, why and how to save them as jfifs

If you look at the Internet, there are cases where it is a jpg file when you save a necessary image or photo, but when you receive it, it becomes a jfif extension. There are cases where it is difficult to check the files because the sort order of the files is different because they have different extensions even though they are received for the purpose of listening or reuse.

This problem mainly appears in browsers of the Chromemium family (Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera browser) and does not appear in other browsers such as Firefox.

It may not be a big deal, but it can be very annoying depending on the person, so in this post, I will talk about the difference between jpg and jfif and how to solve it to help in this situation.

Difference between JPG/JPEG and JFIF

Before we talk about JPG image files being saved as JFIF files when saving image files in the browser, let's first understand what JPG and JFIF are.

The Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG), commonly known as a type of image format, is precisely the joint responsible for the maintenance of JPEG , JPEG 2000 , JPEG XR , JPEG XT , JPEG XS , JPEG XL , and related digital image standards. Talk about the committee.

The extension used for images using a lossy compression technique developed for photographic images by the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) is commonly known as JPG/JPEG.

Except for files that record only contents without a fixed format such as text files, information about the format of the file is recorded at the top of the file so that you can know which format was used for the file.

In most cases, the format name of the file is the same as the extension, but there are cases where it is different. It is one of the files corresponding to the case where the JPG file is different. no see.

So, if you run Paint in Windows and open the file saved as a JPG file in Notepad, you can see the letter JFIF at the top, and you can see that this file is a file using the JFIF format.

Why browsers save JPG images as jfifs

When downloading a file uploaded as an attachment to a website, the program that handles the download of the file from the website can specify the MIME type and extension that informs the format of the file. However, in the case of an image file included in the website's HTML, it may vary depending on the web server environment used to operate the website or the browser that processes the image.

In Windows, MIME types and extensions are stored and managed for each file format used. Of these, two MIME types are used for JPG files.

In the past, if Windows used the jpg extension or used jpg or jpeg for both MIME types in Windows, image/pjpeg and image/jpeg are used as MIME types for JPG files based on Windows 10 or 11, which is used recently. Among these MIME types, image/pjpeg is set to jpg extension, and image/jpeg is set to jfif extension.

If the browser applies its own extension to the two MIME types used for JPG files, it can be used only with the jpg extension, but since Chromium-based browsers use the extension specified in the MIME type set in the window, the web browser When saving an image file on the site, it is sometimes saved as a jfif or as a jpg depending on the MIME type of the image.

Resolution

If you want to use only the jpg extension for JPG images, since both jfif and jpg files use the same format, save the image on the website and then open it in an image editing program such as Paint and use it by “save as” or simply You can use it by changing only the extension.

Basically, it is solved if Microsoft processes the extension to be jpg in the MIME information included in the registry, but it can be solved simply by editing the extension stored in the registry.

In Windows, start > Run > type "regedit" and press the Enter key to display the registry editor. In this editor, go to "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/jpeg" in the tree on the left and the contents on the right Double-click "Extension" in the middle to change the extension to ".jpg".

After restarting the browser and downloading the image, you can see that the extension of the JPG file is treated as jpg.

However, it should be taken into account that the information may change again when Windows is updated or the browser is reinstalled.

I hope this has been helpful to those who needed the information covered in this post.

This post ends here.
